GUEST BLOGGER: Freelance Fashion Illustrator – Wendy Ding

Freelance Fashion Illustrator, Miss Wendy Ding

This Wednesday I would like to welcome Miss Wendy Ding to be my guest blogger! Wendy and I have spent some time together, mostly talking about cute boys in bands, doing some singing and also a little bit of dancing! She is certainly a stylish lady, which is probably why she makes such a fantastic fashion illustrator! Some of my favourite illustrations by Wendy are her food girls – make sure you check them out because they are quite delicious! Hope you enjoy 🙂

nerdbiskit: So, what’s the story? Who are you, and what do you do? How did it all start? Short bio!

Wendy: My name is Wendy Ding and I’m an illustrator with a penchant for drawing all things fashion related. It started when I was little and played dress up in my mom’s clothes. I was born in China and lived there til I was almost 9. Then I moved to England (where my parents were studying) for 1.5 years before calling Toronto, Canada my new home.

nerdbiskit: Why do you do it?

Wendy: Because I love it and almost nothing else makes me feel more fulfilled. Also because it’s the most honest way for me to contribute myself to the world.

nerdbiskit: What’s unique about you and what you do? What sets you apart from the pack?

Wendy: Hmm… I guess I always try to inject a bit of my personality and life into my work. Either in terms of quirkiness, colour choices, or resemblance to my friends/crushes!

nerdbiskit: What/who is your inspiration?

Wendy: I listen to music all the time when I work, so that definitely inspires me on a regular basis. Other than that, I guess confident, positive and go-getter type people inspire me!

nerdbiskit: What are some of your favourite things? (To do, to eat, to think about, etc.)

Wendy: I love to dance, go shopping (window or actual), drink tea, watch funny shows (Portlandia!) and movies, and most recently I’ve been getting into podcasts. “This American Life” is a particular fave.

nerdbiskit: How do you know Lisa Bell of nerdbiskit? Do you think her mustache obsession is a little ridiculous?

Wendy: We were Sheridan College classmates when we were both studying illustration! I got to know Lisa very well one summer when we bonded over Backstreet Boys and other 90’s boy band nostalgia. Good times !

I think her mustache obsession is awesome! Just another way for us gals to have fun with facial hair.

nerdbiskit: Anything else you’d like to share? Any fun facts about you?

Don’t know how cool this is but to this day I still find it easier to count in Mandarin. It was the first language I learned and although English is my primary now as I’ve spoken it the longest, the way numbers are constructed in Mandarin make more logical sense. I don’t know, I guess you’ll have to speak it to know it.

Malcolm Gladwell explains it well here in this snippet from his book “Outliers.”

nerdbiskit: That about wraps it up! Check out more of this fantastic lady’s work via the links below – perhaps even commission her for a fantastically fashionable portrait!

Here’s The Daily Dress! Nothing screams “spring is here” like purple snake print… uh, right?
