GUEST BLOGGER: Freelance Make Up Artist – Kristen Harper

Freelance Make-up Artist, Miss Kristen Harper

This Wednesday, I would like to welcome Miss Kristen Harper, a lovely and talented freelance make up artist! I met her a few years back, when she hired me to take her place as a visual merchandiser. She left some pretty big shoes to fill, but I did my best and she was an excellent trainer. I’m excited to see how well she’s doing with her freelance work, and can’t wait to hire her for my wedding one day! (Hopefully this happens before I’m too old and wrinkly, though I’m sure she would make me look fantastic even if I am) 🙂

She does fantastic work, and I love the amount of creativity she puts into her photoshoots! My favourite was Twisted Disney – make sure you take a peek after you read the interview! ❤ ENJOY!

nerdbiskit: So, what’s the story? Who are you, and what do you do? How did it all start? Short bio!

Kristen: My name is Kristen Harper and I am a Makeup Artist. I guess it all started when I was a kid. I would spend my days drawing pictures and cutting out images of celebrities from every magazine I could find for inspiration. I used to get into my mothers makeup and perform makeovers on the neighbourhood kids. Once I started wearing makeup, I decided to be really creative with it which resulted in many strange looks from my classmates. When it was time to go to college I decided to take a makeup course to improve my skills. I excelled in all of my courses and started to work professionally following my graduation. Over the past few years as a Freelance Artist, I have worked on many weddings, photoshoots and short films.

nerdbiskit: Why do you do it?

Kristen: Because there’s nothing better than the feeling you get when you help make someone feel great about themselves! Plus it’s like playing with Barbies everyday! I love it! I get to be creative and display my artwork on my clients faces everyday!

nerdbiskit: What’s unique about you and what you do? What sets you apart from the pack?

Kristen: I’ve been told by many photographers that my application skills make me unique. It is very important to me that skin still looks like skin. I don’t think anybody should ever look overly made up. Over the years I’ve perfected my technique of making my makeup look flawless in person and in photographs. I don’t think there are any rules to makeup. I believe being yourself makes you the perfect artist. No artist should ever try to be like another artist.

nerdbiskit: What/who is your inspiration?

Kristen: Everything inspires me! I find inspiration in anything that grabs my attention. I’m always getting random photoshoot ideas from watching TV, reading magazines or just walking down the street. I read a lot about other Makeup Artists and how they got started. They inspire me to never give up and continue to work hard to try and get my name out there!

nerdbiskit: What are some of your favourite things? (To do, to eat, to think about, etc.)

Kristen: I am addicted to movies and celebrities. It’s quite the obsession! I am in love with everything vintage and truly think I was meant to grow up in the 50’s! I like to read every free chance I get and draw in my sketch book. Most people know me for my ice cream obsession. I can eat ice cream all day, every day. My favourite is Super Kid from Laura Secord.

nerdbiskit: How do you know Lisa Bell of nerdbiskit? Do you think her mustache obsession is a little ridiculous? Do you have any cool stories you’d like to share?

Kristen: I first met Lisa a few years ago when I worked at a clothing store. I interviewed her to take my position in the store. She seemed like she would be a perfect fit because of her creativity. Eventually we both had to move on to start our artistic careers!

I’ve been watching Lisa’s business grow and think it’s pretty awesome what a little mustache can do!

nerdbiskit: That about wraps it up! Check out more of this fantastic lady’s work via the links below – perhaps even hire her for your own wedding! 😀

Scully & The Daily Dress

YOU GUYS… I am so excited about the recent announcement from Fan Expo: GILLIAN ANDERSON is going to be there! I am a huge X-Files nerd, so this is awesome news. The only thing that could make this any better is if Mulder was by her side (everyone knows how much I love Duchovny <3) B & I are currently re-watching the entire X-Files series, and are just about to start season 6.

Anyway, I just hope someone will come cover my table for me while I run off to snap pics of Mrs. Anderson and toss her some mustaches. In the meantime, I found this fabulous pin up inspired photo of her – what a hottie:

She just inspired me to go ahead and make a TOP TEN GIRLS that I dig list, to go along with my recent TOP TEN HUNKIE DUDES post from last week – I’d do it if I had time tonight, but unfortunately it will have to wait. I was running around all evening from store to store to find a display for my character tote bags – new this year! WOO! Anyway, with some minor modifications I found something that will do the trick and will sit perfect on half my table without taking up too much space. I’m excited to do one final practice table set up before the show! Here’s a sneak peak:

Anyway, I am off – another busy day tomorrow!

Here is The Daily Dress – another brown one with polka dots. Also I look ‘saucy’ for some reason, so, sorry about that. :p

Don’t forget to check in tomorrow for my GUEST BLOGGER, Freelance Make-up Artist Miss Kristen Harper! Super stoked!

Oral Hygiene Rocks & The Daily Dress

So I don’t know what it is, but I absolutely LOVE the dentist. Cleanings specifically. I just find it so relaxing… and I LOVE having clean teeth. I suppose I’m a bit of an oral hygiene fanatic – I even floss every single night before bed. EVERY night. Never miss a day. My teeth feel squeaky clean right no so I’m pretty content 😀 I spend as much time flossing and brushing as I do crafting…. er, well maybe not. But close. I at least put the same amount of effort into both!

So it looks like I’m about half way through my Daily Dress challenge – think I’ve reached close to 30 now, and am running low. I might not even be able to wear a few of the remaining ones because they are just far too ugly! My options are becoming less and less and are rather boring now… I was thinking I might continue on with The Daily Skirt, although I have far less of those… probably under 20. I haven’t decided yet.

Here’s The Daily Dress for today:

You obviously can’t tell with the cardi on, but the arms are ripped into pieces… and not in a super cool, fashionable grunge way. More like a dirt bag, you-need-a-new-dress, women, type way. I should probably toss this one. Look how unhappy I am in it, too. PEACE OUT BROWN FLORAL!

Speaking of peacing out, I am off! This is going to be one busy week! Today already flew by and now it’s time to work away on some crafts – I’m thinking I’ll be attaching fabric tags in bags, then if there is time, adding my 2.25″ buttons to Etsy!

I Make Buttons, Didja Know? & The Daily Dress

Today was one of the most productive days ever! Not that I don’t often have days like this, I just pushed extra hard since I have so much to get done for my first show of the year, in only TWO WEEKS – Toronto ComiCon on March 10 & 11!!! I will be away next weekend in Ottawa, visiting a very good lady pal (<3!) so I had to get as much done today as possible, just in case this week gets busy in the evenings… you just never know. I think I’m about ready to go, save a few minor finishing touches… oh and signage. Oh, and a display for totes. Oh and a few more bottle openers…. OMG I’M NOT EVEN CLOSE *minor freak out*

Ok, no I think I really am good to go 🙂

Anyway, in case you didn’t already know this about me… I make buttons! LOTS OF BUTTONS. And guess what? I take custom requests for bulk button orders. I have 2 fantastic, semi-automatic professional machines, in 1″ and 2.25″. I updated my Etsy today with the 2.25″ bottle openers, the 1″ buttons are already on there, and soon I will have 2.25″ buttons and pocket mirrors up there as well. (Possibly even tonight!)

I already had my first bottle opener order for bridal shower favours! (I posted about them last Sunday) which I thought was a very cool idea, and have a second order on deck. Woo! Busybusybusy.

If you’re interested in ordering any, just email me:

All the pricing is listed on my Etsy shop, and just because I heart you for following my blog, you can use coupon code BLOGFAN for 20% off 🙂

I also whipped up a Ryan Gosling keychain bottle opener… just because it had to be done.

The process of pressing buttons is sort of calming for me. I could do it for hours… actually, I have done it for hours, many, many times! My largest order so far was for 1000 1″ buttons, it was pretty intense but luckily I had a few months to complete it.

Hmmm what else did I want to tell you… oh yah! My guest blogger this week is going to be the very lovely and talented freelance make up artist, Miss Kristen Harper!

I’m very excited about sharing her awesome work with you! She’s a pretty cool lady, and I used to work with her back in the day as a visual merchandiser… but I don’t want to ruin Wednesday’s guest post!

Ok, I’m out! Signs to be made!

Here’s The Daily Dress – boring ol’ dress for chores and crafting. I also attempted a high bun for the first time… perhaps I might rock it in public sometime, it’s not too terrible I suppose.

Busy Day, Daily Dress

Such a busy lil’ Saturday! I finally got my eye curtain lifted so I can see again (aka=got my bangs cut.) My hair dresser is so 80’s, she cut my layers super short so I can poof & spike it like a rock star. Luckily I’m down with 80’s hair, and even if I wasn’t, the layers will grow out quickly… I hope. I opted out of a shorter cut, which is what I was considering. Maybe for the summer…

After the cut, and some shopping, I was off to a birthday dinner party – fun and delicious! We had steak with wild mushrooms sauteed in red wine, kale salad, & lemon cream cheese cupcakes for dessert – sooo good! Unfortunately, I forgot to bring my iPhone along to the dinner party to snap some pics – but I can assure you that it was fantastic.

Anyway, here is The Daily Dress:

I was petting a Dane puppy in the second shot, but he doesn’t like to sit still for photos. You can kinda see his nose. My hair doesn’t look TOO 80’s in this.

Cupcake Fail & 1954

Friday! Today at work, after the most disappointing snow day of all time (there was a call for a huge winter storm and we woke up to… some rain, and no day off!) we had a cupcake eating challenge, which also turned into a huge fail. Miss T was going to eat SIX cuppies, some with buttercream frosting and some with cream cheese frosting, PILED HIGH for a total of $30 OR a bottle of vintage vino. She went into the challenge with full on energy, but it quickly went downhill and left her feeling sick and defeated.

Here is the super anti-climatic event in photos:

Poor girl. At least it made our Friday a little better. We had a whole team in the lunch room cheering her on, and to be fair she gave it her best – next time just needs to develop a better strategy. No breaks, just mow ’em down. Also, don’t eat a sub before hand. This was good practice for next time! WHAT A CHAMP.
Anyway, here is The Daily Dress – sometimes I just want to party like it’s 1954. I loves me a swing dress for some winin’, dinin’ & dancin’.

Thursday Things I Dig & The Daily Dress

It has sure been one crazy and stressful week – even for a short 4 day one! We had our performance reviews at work, which of course I was worried about for absolutely no reason. Anyway, I made it through another one, and here are some things I’ve been diggin’ this week!

1. Kimbra’s album, Vows. There’s a super cool video here: Settle Down Also, I really dig her hair. I’ve been thinking about cutting mine for a while… perhaps just like hers?

2. Take Shelter – this is a fantastic movie, if you’re interested in psychological happenings… probably would feel really slow if you’re not. So good. Still thinking about it.

3. Really loving the orange pekoe tea from my Tassimo! Taking a break from loose leaf, I’m bored with all my current flavours.

4. 4 day work week!

5. My first guest blog post went up last night – if you haven’t seen it yet, check it out: I interviewed the lovely Miss Heather Saunders of Needlings.

6. Came home to a sweet little surprise in my mail box – a handmade thank you card from Sarah of NobodyPutsSarahInTheCorner (she’s also doing a giveaway for one of my wearable mustaches, last chance to enter is tonight, so head over there asap!)

7. This story about a cat who saved a lady’s life just made my day – my whole week even!

8. THE POSSIBILITY OF A SNOW DAY TOMORROW! The storm is on it’s way guys. SNOWDAYSNOWDAYSNOWDAY pleasepleaseplease

Ok, that’s it for me, lots of sewing to do this evening and lots of hoping for the day off tomorrow 😉

Guest Bloggers Ahead! & The Daily Dress

Nerdbiskit fully supports anyone who is willing to take a chance and put their all into what they believe in – not just half way, but all the way in. Whether it is art, charity, sports – no matter. I want to cover it all!

If you’re reading this, thinking to yourself, WOW I am totally awesome and want Miss Lisa of nerdbiskit to interview ME, then send me an email:

Heather Saunders of Needlings as her very first Wednesday Guest Blogger!

This Wednesday, I would like to welcome Miss Heather Saunders of Needlings! I’ve known Heather for just a few years but we quickly hit it off and became good crafty pals. She probably doesn’t know exactly how much of an inspiration she is to me, so I might have just spilled the beans ❤ Now on to her fabulous-ness!

nerdbiskit: So, what’s the story? Who are you, and what do you do? How did it all start? Short bio!

Needlings: Hi! My name is Heather Saunders and I am a plush artist/toy designer and the creator of Needlings! I make toys and other little goodies and have since 2007 when I started my little Etsy shop after making a little felt toy as a gift after many years of unfocused sewing and crafting growing up. After four and a half years of sewing and selling Needlings, I have turned it in to my full-time job with Needlings being carried in over a dozen stores in the US and Canada, in my own Etsy shop, and shows in the Hamilton/Toronto area.

nerdbiskit: Why do you do it?

Needlings: Because it’s the best! Seriously, I’m living the dream and I can’t imagine working as hard on anything else. It’s all worth it and I just hope to keep going and growing in to the future!

nerdbiskit: What’s unique about you and what you do? What sets you apart from the pack?

Needlings: (Getting deep Lisa!) Hm, I think early on I saw the need to stick to a look with my work that would be recognizable – something unique to myself. I also just make what I love so this isn’t a big struggle. I always loved owls way back to a tiny owl pin my mom had in the 80s and grade 2 construction paper owl crafts after learning about owl pellets!

I think having a distinct line and good photographs of my products have helped me get attention from retailers. I also strongly believe that everyone has to find their own path and do what feels right. I also work as much as my hands and brain will let me. 🙂

nerdbiskit: What/who is your inspiration?

Needlings: I am inspired by lots of things. Often times just the continued goal of working for myself lights a fire so to speak. I was never as motivated as when I started to see a future full-time business for myself. I never thought I would end up doing what I love so many hours of the day. 🙂

Other creative people inspire me every day. Not even just the ones making a full-time go at it but the ones who make time in their lives to make things they love or create something special because the inspiration strikes them.

Otherwise, my mom and all that sappy junk. (Just kidding, seriously, my mom too!)

*note from nerdbiskit: this wonderful mom also has her own amazing Etsy shop, featuring beautifully knit cowls – I have one in purple and it rocks!)

nerdbiskit: What are some of your favourite things? (To do, to eat, to think about, etc.)

Needlings: Handmade toys and other goodies, handmade shops, tiny galleries, good movies, cats, tea, travel, family, friends, hugs.

To do: SEW, design/doodle, knit, spend time with the people (and kitties) I love, write, take pictures, read, drink tea with sweets, window shop, hug.

nerdbiskit: How do you know Lisa Bell of nerdbiskit? Do you think her mustache obsession is a little ridiculous? Do you have any cool stories you’d like to share?

Needlings: I met Lisa doing craft shows and comic conventions and yes, she is completely ridiculous all around…
And I love it! One of my favourite Lisa craft show memories is when we did Locke Street Festival together in Hamilton and attracted a stray cat with her cat toys, who proceeded to climb all over our tables while we laughed in disbelief. Cat ladies through and through! Really lots of fun craft show memories of standing behind tables and chatting!

nerdbiskit: That about wraps it up! Learn more about this fantastic lady via the links below!
