June Blog

Time for my monthly blog update! I’ve been busy as usual since my last post – I moved to Hamilton over the May long weekend and everything went smoothly! It was super fast and easy, and I was grateful for all of the help from family and pals. What a lucky gal I am! It didn’t take long to unpack the boxes and set everything up (we were literally all unpacked by Monday evening, except for a few shelves and wall decorations.) I can’t stand living amid chaos and boxes, so I pretty much didn’t bother sleeping until everything was in it’s place 🙂

It was hard saying goodbye to my retro townie – I loved this place so much, and so did the kitties:

But it didn’t take long to adjust to the new place, and here are a few of my favourite things/spaces – first up, obviously, the ‘biskit craft room!!! It was already painted a pale pea green which sort of matches with my brand colours – how perfect!

I also love the peg board in the kitchen (we cook a lot, so this is amazingly convenient):

I also dig our funky little living room:

and this super sweet retro brown chair that I picked up for only $7  – what a find! The kitties love it, too (which is the most important part):

New home sweet home ❤ I also love the area we’re in – so many beautiful gardens all around the neighbourhood 🙂 And I’m closer to more of my pals now, too (old and new ones) which is exciting!

I got some of the sweetest house warming gifts, including this chalkboard photo frame from my friend Miss Tea. We made them together as a super fun craft project, which was the best part:

And this adorable pom pom plant from Heather – which matches perfectly in the craft room with it’s green & orange:

Such sweet ladies!

After the move and unpacking were complete, I had to get back to crafting ASAP! May/June are the beginning of wedding season, which is probably the busiest time of year for custom orders (next to Christmas, of course.) Plenty of brides-to-be have been requesting bottle opener keychains and pocket mirrors for wedding favours:

and I’ve also been getting lots of requests for custom couple portrait pillows. I love making these!

I’m super behind in re-stocking for shows with all the requests, but hopefully I can get caught up this week before my next show, Heirlooms, An Etsy Artisan Market, in Welland on Saturday June 15th! My dear friend Heather of Needlings will be there as well which makes it even more awesome! 5 more sleeps!

I did manage to squeeze in one show on June 1st, Craftstock on James North in Hamilton. Always a fun time thanks to Laura, the lovely organizer, and also creator behind Adelaide 🙂 (she makes some super sweet hair flowers so check ’em out at the next Craftstock!) This was my set up for the show (although much less yellow-tinged in person – haha, sorry about that):

In other exciting news, I got a new job, still as a graphic designer, but at a design agency a little closer to my new home! I’ve always wanted to work at an agency so am super excited. People are always shocked to hear that I work full time on top of running my own bizz, while also balancing a social life… I wish I had the secret to doing it all to share with you. I guess my tips would be: plenty of caffeinated tea! And cat naps! And have lots of crafty friends so hangouts can double as “work” dates! Probably a bit of motivation and passion don’t hurt, either 😉

Anyway, after Heirlooms, I am taking July off of shows to prep for the August Art Crawl on James North in Hamilton, Fan Expo, Locke Street Festival, and Supercrawl! My most favourite shows of the year! WOO HOO!

Hope you guys are doing great! Happy early summer!

Kickin’ off 2013!

Hi guys! Happy New Year! (I can still say that until the end of this month, right?) Hope everyone had a lovely holiday season and all that fun stuff. Mine was nice and quiet as per usual 🙂 There were plenty of famjams and friendly visits, and I even took a bit of a break from crafting, although I still had plenty to do and restock from all of my holiday shows!

After New Year’s I got right back to work, of course! I started off with a few new button designs, “cats are my boyfriend” and Gangnam style (how could I resist). They will also be available as bottle opener keychains in my Etsy shop in the near future!

And of course, Grumpy Cat! (He’s not on a button yet, but will be shortly):

I also sewed plenty of mustaches, catnip kitty tacos, and a few new character tote bags as well.

I think I’m right on track for my first show of the year, coming up in just 2 short weeks: Craftstock in Hamilton, ON on February 2nd! I’m pretty excited since shows don’t usually kick off until mid-March for me, so it’s nice to get started earlier this year!

I even had a special visitor come see me for a working afternoon this past weekend! The wonderful illustrator/comic artist Vicki Nerino. (You can read her guest blog interview here.) We did a whole lot of catching up, while also getting some things checked off our to do list! I was working on buttons for NYC Pride, while she doodled characters for some upcoming comic books for TCAF!

It’s always nice to have some company while I work 🙂 My usual crafternooner, Miss Heather from Needlings, and I have taken up a new venture of exploring tea rooms! Well just one so far, but we plan to visit a whole bunch more, Tea Tour 2013! This first one, Taylor’s Tea Room, in Dundas was quite lovely. We also found a nice door to pose in front of on our way home!

And look what that lovely lady made me, my very own nerdbiskit craft show skirt!!! I’m so excited to wear it at my next show! Eee!

tumblr_mfv6y4wbDZ1r4a3yjo1_500

After Craftstock, I will be a vendor at Toroto ComiCON on March 9th & 10th! Super excited for that as usual 🙂

Well I better get back to work, there are custom button orders for NYCPride to complete!

Summer Of Nerdbiskit Recap: London, Shows, & Busy-ness!

Hi guys! It’s been a while since I’ve written an actual blog post – I’ve been copping out with my weekly Guest Bloggers! So I figured it was time for an update, and my guest bloggers have run dry for the time being. Let’s see, my last post was in May, just before I left for England! So I guess I will start with my trip!

England was pretty awesome! There was so much to see and do, and a week certainly wasn’t long enough for a visit. The jet lag hit me harder than I imagined it would, and I wish I’d had more time to rest within the first few days! I was exhausted by the end but it was definitely worth it! We took in most of the typical tourist-y sites, including: The British Museum, Piccadilly Circus, Parliament, Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square, Big Ben, Harrods, Tate Museum, Tower of London, London & Tower Bridge, the London Eye & waterfront, and the National Gallery… of course I brought Stachio along for the ride! He seemed to enjoy his visit.

Everyone told me the shopping is awesome in London, but aside from this pretty dress, I didn’t really buy much else!

I definitely had to enjoy some high tea, though! The tea was SO STRONG and delicious in England. I loved it!

When I returned home, exhausted, and in need of a few days of rest, I then had to prep for my next show, First Sunday Stroll in Fonthill. This was my first full 10′ x 10′ set up with 2 full tables, and a “make your own button” station! It was a ton of work, and my mommy offered to come along and help me out! It was her first show, too – probably not the best one to start with, since I had SO MUCH to bring! But I think she enjoyed it, and was awesome at talking people into buying mustaches for their car 😉 The weather wasn’t amazing, but the rain mostly held off, and overall it was a good show! This was my set up:

Just a few days later, I had my first Art Crawl of the year on James North in Hamilton! It was…. AMAZING! I was so busy the entire night. Non stop button making and new friends to meet and chat with! I couldn’t believe how many people were out – such a fun time! I am already stoked for my next one in August. My mommy must have liked doing the First Sunday Stroll after all, because she made an appearance at the crawl, too! And brought me a lemon cupcake – yum!

Since those two shows, I’ve been super busy with my crafts: re-stocking, bulk button orders, custom wedding pillows, and t-shirt printing! And also with some freelance design work! So far, my Summer Of Nerdbiskit-ing has been productive and awesome! I’m loving every minute! OH! And I also launched my new website: nerdbiskit.com Check it out! I’m so proud 🙂

Looks like July is going to be an insanely busy month, too – both for work and for play! My own birthday celebrations, a wedding to attend, my next show Atomic Lollipop, a dinner party to plan, more birthday celebrations – and then it’s time to prep for FanExpo!!! AHHH! So much busy!

I better head off to get some work done! Miss Heather from Needlings and I have been meeting once a week to sew, drink tea, and chat! We’re officially co-workers for the summer! 🙂 So off I go to visit her for the afternoon!

Have a good weekend everyone!

Just some stuff…

Man, I wish I had a theme song for Thursday Things I Dig! Alas, we will have to suffer through another weekly post together, without one. And if anyone wants to make me a jingle and donate it to my blog, please feel free 🙂

Another busy week! Aren’t they all? I have a show this weekend, Wizard World Comic Con in the ol’ T-dot so I’m excited for that, and then I am taking a month off of shows for some personal time, to build nerdbiskit.com… and a trip to Europe! Which leads me into my Thursday Things I Dig!

1. LONDON IS BOOKED! I will be heading over to England in May with some peeps for a wee vacation! I also have a friend in Scotland that I am hoping to meet up with while I am over there, though I don’t have a whole lot of time. I’ve never been, so I am pretty excited! Naturally, I’ve already scoped out the best affordable vintage shopping areas. I like to buy a dress every time I visit some place new, so I’m excited to share what I find in London when I return.

2. WIZARD WORLD Comic Con this weekend! Here’s a little sneak peak at my set up. I hope it’s a good show, I remember the past few years have been great and I have a nice full 8′ table all to myself this time around, so my expectations are high! But not too high. You never know how it could turn out. Anyway, I have a table companion on Sunday, but will be solo on Saturday so am a little nervous about what to do when I need a pee break! Haha. Feel free to come visit me, and please offer to watch my booth so I can pee? 🙂

3. I acquired this super sweet vintage sewing basket over the long weekend. It used to belong to my grandma, and when I was up North visiting my parents my mom passed it my way! It’s even filled with tons of thread and needles and other good stuff!

4. I watched an amazing documentary on Kevin Clash, the puppeteer behind Elmo. His story was so inspirational and made me feel like a kid again, in that I can do anything I want, and be anything I want to be. It was awesome. Also working at the Jim Henson studios, making puppets and having access to drawers full of fur, mustaches, eyes, etc… INCREDIBLE. What a dream. I want to be Kevin Clash.

5. Someone sent me this via Twitter earlier this week: COWBOY COMB and it is easily one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen. Particularly the gold one, for only $100. If only I had a ‘stache, I would buy it up in a second. But since I don’t, someone also shared this Build-A-Beard with me, downloadable and cut-out-able beards! This will just have suffice for now.

6. What is this I found? Tetley PERK? A new tea that claims to have all the caffeine content of a coffee? I’m excited to test it out tomorrow morning.

7. Oh, and last fun thing, I received a happy button testimonial from a fantastic customer AND SUPER COOL COMEDIAN who you should check out, Fat Apollo, celebrity:
“Got my buttons! Easily the best I have ever ordered!”

THE BEST!?!? From me? Celebrity endorsed? Well okay, I’ll accept it. And appreciate the feedback. Thanks to Mr. Apollo who gave me permission to use his awesome quote 🙂

I guess that’s it! I have to run off and do some last minute crafting to top up my stock before the show this weekend. Here’s hoping it’s a good one! You can follow my live show posts on Facebook or Twitter 🙂

Crafternoon #1 & The Daily Dress

What a busy day! I hosted my very first (hopefully of many to come) Ladies Crafternoon! It started off small, just the 5 of us today, but I would love for it to grow and see some new faces in the future! Think it got off to a good start though 🙂

We enjoyed some tea, snacks, pineapple cupcakes with pina colada cream cheese frosting, and some delicious cranberry scones with white chocolate frosting. So tasty!

Unfortunately I forgot to start taking pictures until we were wrapping up…. oops! It was also super dark by this time, and my house is poorly lit… I’ll document it much better next time around, promise.

Here are the wonderful ladies who joined me today!

Miss Heather Saunders, aka Needlings. Pictured here, she is stuffing and sewing her famous owl mommas. She runs her own small crafting business and is very successful with her beautiful plush owls and other fun characters! She is definitely an inspiration for me! Check out her Etsy shop, follow her on Twitter, or LIKE her on Facebook. Trust me, you won’t regret it.

Miss Jill Secord, a very talented illustrator and designer. She has fabulous style, art wise and also with fashion – are you seeing those fantastic teal colour tights she’s rocking? Today she was working on some commission pieces. You can check out her beautiful illustrations here: t42art.com or request commissions from her on Deviant Art.

Mrs. Kelsy Leduc, another fantastic illustrator and designer. She is also, upon my insistence, going to start making plush toys during our future craft clubs! Today she was working on a personal project, some beautiful blue pillows for her couch. Check out some of her illustrations here: www.kelseypettitillustration.com

Miss Courtney, my sidekick in life – and today, my fantastic assistant! Today she was helping me press bottle openers to fill out a custom order I received which was absolutely wonderful. I let her raid my closet and paid her in dresses. I think that was fair. She’s not so much into the crafting yet, but perhaps some knitting will happen in the future??? Follow her on Twitter because she’s pretty cool.

I just worked on sewing some characters for my cotton totes! Check out my Etsy, follow me on Twitter, and LIKE me on Facebook – if you haven’t already! 🙂

Here’s part of the aftermath at my work station:

We were also joined by the furry princess Greta, who received plenty of pets and love, while Rico was grumpy and hid under the bed. He’s a moody little man sometimes.

Such a fabulous Saturday surrounded by some of my favourite ladies! Hope you all had a good one, too!

Here’s The Daily Dress – I needed something fun for today, so I went with leopard print!

Friday Slacker

It’s Friday! Let the weekending begin! I always love Fridays, even though it’s still a work day – must be the anticipation of 2 days off! It also helped that we were treated to Starbucks this morning (dirty chai for me, my fave!), a team lunch (veggie burger with avocado & sprouts!), and the best part of this particular Friday, was that the girls and I decided to start a wine club! We’re going to sample a new wine every weekend – here’s this week’s selection: Rossobastardo. I’m so excited to have some other people to share my love of vino with, and I think it’ll be very cool to learn more about the world of wines, since I’ve been a fan for a few years now. This will be our first weekend, so I’ll probably start a little wine review page on my blog next week 🙂

Also, an update on the catnip tea – once brewed did not interest the kitties in the least. Definitely not potent enough, and I think the other ingredients were overpowering (ginger, fennel, orange and peppermint.) It wasn’t the most delicious tea I’ve ever had, but it wasn’t bad either.

Tonight I’m going to hang out with a giant oversized Dane puppy, enjoy a glass of wine from the club’s first selection, and spend some time chillin’ with my home slice, B.

Here’s the pup, his name is Odin and he’s only 6 months old!

As for The Daily Dress, today was casual Friday at work, so I’m in skinnies and not a dress *gasp* I’m going to cheat a bit and post a dress photo from last Friday night, which I wore to a dinner date. I forgot I even had it in my closet, but really dig the mod style it’s got going on. It’s a keeper!

Catnip Tea, Lollipops & The Daily Dress

Mmmm, currently enjoying some Saigon Chai from DavidsTea, which I purchased last night on my tea date! It only took one sip to become my new favourite chai. I also found bought some catnip tea! Well, it’s actually an organic herbal blend with fennal, ginger, peppermint, orange and some other stuff, but catnip is on that ingredient list. I’ve been curious about making tea with catnip for a while now… I hear it’s great for headaches! But the scent has always been a little off-putting. Anyway, I will report back on how it tastes. I tested the dry leaves on the kitties, Rico ate a little bit but wasn’t too interested. Greta just pranced off. They are the biggest nip addicts I’ve ever seen, so I’m guessing the catnip potency just wasn’t up to their standards. We’ll see if that changes once it’s in hot tea form – perhaps more of the fumes will be released and they’ll go nuts!

I have a dinner date with my parents this evening, then I’ll be working on mustaches, starting on a guest blog post for Nobody Puts Sarah in the Corner, and that’s about it 🙂

I’ll leave you with The Daily Dress:

This grapes soda dress was a birthday gift purchased from Modcloth (I picked it out, of course.) It looked amazing online but fits rather strange up top and is a bit too short for my liking. It’s going in the “maybe” pile. It pairs well with bright green tights, and I sort of feel like a lollipop today – which makes it a cheery little pick-me-up dress for a boring ol’ Wednesday.
