Spring is… not quite in the air. But tacos are!

Hi guys! Hope everyone had a fun and safe St. Patty’s day! πŸ™‚ I was out of commission last week after Toronto ComiCON due to a stomach flu (it was terrible! I hope none of you get it!) so wasn’t able to get much work done. I suppose I needed a bit of a rest anyway, but could have done without the sickness part. Anyway, I recovered fairly quickly and have been back to work with lots of custom orders (bulk buttons, and portrait pillows – here’s the one I’m working on currently:)

I decided to take April off of shows to make sure I stay on top of all this work, plus I have a ton of re-stocking to do from the con… annnnnd because of some other exciting news, but I don’t want to share just yet until it’s confirmed. My lips are sealed! At least until next time πŸ˜‰

I mentioned in my last blog that I would share the podcast interview I had with Guys With Pencils, which you can have a listen to here. We talk about cats, mustaches, cons, and other fun stuff! It was a blast catching up with these guys, and their podcast is awesome… if you haven’t already, be sure to check ’em out! They’ve been featured in the top 3 spot of iTunes “New and Noteworthy” podcasts, and even if you don’t listen to my interview, they’re got an amazing assortment of talented animators, cartoonists, illustrators, etc. to chose from.

I guess I should also fill you in on Toronto ComiCON where I was on March 9 & 10. It was a pretty typical convention, full of many familiar faces and fantastic energy! Always a fun time! I tested out a new booth set up which allowed me for some “face space” since I’m usually hidden behind my epic display. I got a lot of compliments on this one, so I think I’ll stick with it for a little while longer:

I also got a lot of compliments on how my outfits matched my branding, which I thought was subtle but was apparently super obvious! πŸ™‚ I like it though. I’m going to get myself a ‘biskit patterned dress soon! Just you wait. I have also been keeping my eye out for a nerdbiskit green pencil skirt – if you see one be sure to let me know!

I was lucky enough to have myself a lovely assistant on Saturday, thanks to Miss Jenny πŸ™‚ It’s always wonderful to have a companion and someone to help set up, and find tea! ❀

I took plenty of mustache photos, which can be seen in my facebook mustache fan albumΒ and acquired a few new catnip toy kitty fans, too! I sold out of catnip tacos, so will be busy stocking those up over the next few weeks.

And my fleece tacos were a big hit, too! This was the first major show I’ve had them at, so I was pretty excited about how people were responding to them. I sold out of those too, so I guess taco making is my number 1 priority over the next month!

My con highlight was when Ajay from InnerSPACE (via Space Channel) stopped by my booth and chose it as his favourite – mostly because of his love for tacos. Check out the video of him snuggling one of my fleece taco pillows here. You can see me lurking in the background (around 3:08)…

Next up on the show list is Art-O-Con in Burlington on Sunday, May 5th. It’ll be a new show for me this year, but will be filled with plenty of vendor pals so I’m sure it’ll be a good time. Hosted by my awesome pal Lara of Jaded Dragon Studios, who looks dashing in a mustache (below):

Also, if anyone reading this knows someone with a shop down on James Street North in Hamilton that wouldn’t mind having me set up out front for the July & August Art Crawls, please get in touch with me! πŸ™‚

One last thing before I go, if you haven’t already, head on over to Okay, Allison’s awesome blog to read a feature on yours truly, and also enter for a chance to win some mustache merch (made by me!)

Okay that’s it from me! I’m off to have tea with one of my favourite crafty ladies!

Summer Of Nerdbiskit Recap: London, Shows, & Busy-ness!

Hi guys! It’s been a while since I’ve written an actual blog post – I’ve been copping out with my weekly Guest Bloggers! So I figured it was time for an update, and my guest bloggers have run dry for the time being. Let’s see, my last post was in May, just before I left for England! So I guess I will start with my trip!

England was pretty awesome! There was so much to see and do, and a week certainly wasn’t long enough for a visit. The jet lag hit me harder than I imagined it would, and I wish I’d had more time to rest within the first few days! I was exhausted by the end but it was definitely worth it! We took in most of the typical tourist-y sites, including: The British Museum, Piccadilly Circus, Parliament, Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square, Big Ben, Harrods, Tate Museum, Tower of London, London & Tower Bridge, the London Eye & waterfront, and the National Gallery… of course I brought Stachio along for the ride! He seemed to enjoy his visit.

Everyone told me the shopping is awesome in London, but aside from this pretty dress, I didn’t really buy much else!

I definitely had to enjoy some high tea, though! The tea was SO STRONG and delicious in England. I loved it!

When I returned home, exhausted, and in need of a few days of rest, I then had to prep for my next show, First Sunday Stroll in Fonthill. This was my first full 10′ x 10′ set up with 2 full tables, and a “make your own button” station! It was a ton of work, and my mommy offered to come along and help me out! It was her first show, too – probably not the best one to start with, since I had SO MUCH to bring! But I think she enjoyed it, and was awesome at talking people into buying mustaches for their car πŸ˜‰ The weather wasn’t amazing, but the rain mostly held off, and overall it was a good show! This was my set up:

Just a few days later, I had my first Art Crawl of the year on James North in Hamilton! It was…. AMAZING! I was so busy the entire night. Non stop button making and new friends to meet and chat with! I couldn’t believe how many people were out – such a fun time! I am already stoked for my next one in August. My mommy must have liked doing the First Sunday Stroll after all, because she made an appearance at the crawl, too! And brought me a lemon cupcake – yum!

Since those two shows, I’ve been super busy with my crafts: re-stocking, bulk button orders, custom wedding pillows, and t-shirt printing! And also with some freelance design work! So far, my Summer Of Nerdbiskit-ing has been productive and awesome! I’m loving every minute! OH! And I also launched my new website: nerdbiskit.com Check it out! I’m so proud πŸ™‚

Looks like July is going to be an insanely busy month, too – both for work and for play! My own birthday celebrations, a wedding to attend, my next show Atomic Lollipop, a dinner party to plan, more birthday celebrations – and then it’s time to prep for FanExpo!!! AHHH! So much busy!

I better head off to get some work done! Miss Heather from Needlings and I have been meeting once a week to sew, drink tea, and chat! We’re officially co-workers for the summer! πŸ™‚ So off I go to visit her for the afternoon!

Have a good weekend everyone!

Just some stuff…

Man, I wish I had a theme song for Thursday Things I Dig! Alas, we will have to suffer through another weekly post together, without one. And if anyone wants to make me a jingle and donate it to my blog, please feel free πŸ™‚

Another busy week! Aren’t they all? I have a show this weekend, Wizard World Comic Con in the ol’ T-dot so I’m excited for that, and then I am taking a month off of shows for some personal time, to build nerdbiskit.com… and a trip to Europe! Which leads me into my Thursday Things I Dig!

1. LONDON IS BOOKED! I will be heading over to England in May with some peeps for a wee vacation! I also have a friend in Scotland that I am hoping to meet up with while I am over there, though I don’t have a whole lot of time. I’ve never been, so I am pretty excited! Naturally, I’ve already scoped out the best affordable vintage shopping areas. I like to buy a dress every time I visit some place new, so I’m excited to share what I find in London when I return.

2. WIZARD WORLD Comic Con this weekend! Here’s a little sneak peak at my set up. I hope it’s a good show, I remember the past few years have been great and I have a nice full 8′ table all to myself this time around, so my expectations are high! But not too high. You never know how it could turn out. Anyway, I have a table companion on Sunday, but will be solo on Saturday so am a little nervous about what to do when I need a pee break! Haha. Feel free to come visit me, and please offer to watch my booth so I can pee? πŸ™‚

3. I acquired this super sweet vintage sewing basket over the long weekend. It used to belong to my grandma, and when I was up North visiting my parents my mom passed it my way! It’s even filled with tons of thread and needles and other good stuff!

4. I watched an amazing documentary on Kevin Clash, the puppeteer behind Elmo. His story was so inspirational and made me feel like a kid again, in that I can do anything I want, and be anything I want to be. It was awesome. Also working at the Jim Henson studios, making puppets and having access to drawers full of fur, mustaches, eyes, etc… INCREDIBLE. What a dream. I want to be Kevin Clash.

5. Someone sent me this via Twitter earlier this week: COWBOY COMB and it is easily one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen. Particularly the gold one, for only $100. If only I had a ‘stache, I would buy it up in a second. But since I don’t, someone also shared this Build-A-Beard with me, downloadable and cut-out-able beards! This will just have suffice for now.

6. What is this I found? Tetley PERK? A new tea that claims to have all the caffeine content of a coffee? I’m excited to test it out tomorrow morning.

7. Oh, and last fun thing, I received a happy button testimonial from a fantastic customer AND SUPER COOL COMEDIAN who you should check out, Fat Apollo, celebrity:
“Got my buttons! Easily the best I have ever ordered!”

THE BEST!?!? From me? Celebrity endorsed? Well okay, I’ll accept it. And appreciate the feedback. Thanks to Mr. Apollo who gave me permission to use his awesome quote πŸ™‚

I guess that’s it! I have to run off and do some last minute crafting to top up my stock before the show this weekend. Here’s hoping it’s a good one! You can follow my live show posts on Facebook or Twitter πŸ™‚

The Daily Dress Comes To An End!

Well folks, it’s official: The Daily Dress has ended! As fun as it was, I must admit that I was getting a little bored of posting pics of myself and coming up with poses every single day! Also, my photographers were growing weary. (Thank you T & B, you were both fantastic!) So, it has come to a bittersweet close, with a total of 40 dresses! (How convenient, I just love when things wrap up nice and neat like that πŸ™‚ )

To celebrate, I went out today and… BOUGHT MYSELF A BRAND NEW DRESS! Well, 2 actually. Here’s one of them. The second one has a pattern made of cats on it… SO AWESOME! But this one is pretty rad too, and made for some excellent Sunday night dinner attire πŸ™‚

Anyway, I hope you’ve enjoyed my collection! I’ll be sure to add any new dresses that come in to my life and keep you posted πŸ˜‰

Thanks for sticking it out with me! Recap is below.

Squirrels, Cats, Gnomes… & The Daily Dress Update

TGIF everyone! Fridays just never really get old do they?

This rascal had an awesome start to his Friday, caught him eating out of my discarded peanut butter jar this morning on my way out! I bet it was an incredible taste experience for the little guy! I mean he already loves nuts, but in the form of peanut butter… image his pure delight? HAPPY FRIDAY SQUIRREL FRIEND!

Another busy week for me… but aren’t they all? I finished up 600 buttons for NYC Pride and had lots of Etsy orders to ship out – plenty of bottle openers & pocket mirrors from the ol’ Etsy shop! My Ryan Gosling merch has been a big seller online recently – so if you’re a fan of that lovely man, be sure to check it out! I had a sick day on Wednesday, so I stayed home and ordered plenty of supplies to stock up my craft room! SO MUCH FELT is on its way from Taiwan (I have the best supplier over there) so there are many characters to be sewn for my totes once it arrives! I should post some of those on Etsy soon… okokok I promise after the next show that I will, since so many of you have been asking!

In other exciting news, The Daily Dress is almost all wrapped up! I have one dress saved for St. Patty’s tomorrow, and then I am buying a celebratory dress to finish it up on Sunday! β€œBut Lisa, how do you protect all those fine dresses from evil thieving dress gnomes?” you might ask. Well, don’t worry, I do in fact have a system in place. Meet my 2 body guards, who alternate between day and night shifts of watching over the pile of dresses. They’re pretty intimidating, and so far no one has attempted to get too close… (well there was one person who managed to steal 3 of my dresses, but I owed her in exchange for her bottle opener helper services so the guards let it slide.) So don’t worry, the dresses are safe! And I will post the Daily Dress recap later this weekend πŸ™‚

Greta, dress guard #1: her super power is the ability to be super comfortable any place, any time. (Though I am not sure how that helps fight off the dress gnomes…)

Rico, dress guard #2: this guy is smaller than the average cat and has a cute face, but don’t let it fool you – his claws expand to easily 6″ long are and constantly sharpened on my couch and the side of my bed. He also suffers “short man” syndrome, so he feels the need to constant bite your ankles to provoke a fight. Beware.

Anyway, I have a craft binge ahead tonight, St. Patty’s celebrations with some super cool ladies tomorrow evening, and dress shopping and a dinner date on Sunday with B – so stoked! Hopefully I get lots of mustaches sewn tonight, because I am completely sold out from the last show! I got 4 done last night, so, it’s slowly filling back up… except I need at least 50… SO MUCH TO SEW! Anyone want to be my assistant sewer? For free? I will give you tea and of course an unlimited supply of mustaches!

I also have a NEW SUPER EXCITING DISPLAY for the next show under way, but I can’t show you pictures yet… It just keeps getting bigger and better! WORLD TAKEOVER CONTINUES…

Can I just say, I AM LOVING THIS FANTASTIC WEATHER, might try to sneak in a quick bike ride around the ravine tonight before dinner and ‘stache sewing… off I go!

Have a Happy St. Patty’s everyone!!!

4 More Sleeps ’til ComiCon & The Daily Dress(es)

It’s been a few days, so first I need to catch y’all up on The Daily Dress – Saturday, Monday & today.

I’m running out of dresses that I can wear to work, and pretty much only have bummin’ around the house ones or party ones left! So what does that mean? I’m almost done with The Daily Dress! This is bitter-sweet for me, since it was a blast and a fun challenge, but I am running out of “poses” and my photographers are growing weary… I’ll have to do one final, official count of all my posts and perhaps reward myself with purchasing a brand new dress?!?! πŸ˜€ Me thinks this is a genius idea…

Anyway, I have a show this weekend, Toronto ComiCon, so I’m super excited! If you’re coming to visit, make sure to stop by booth A47 (floor plan can be downloaded here) and try on a mustache or two! *(If you haven’t seen my mustache fan album on Facebook, be sure to check it out!) This year is going to be the BEST year for shows I’ve ever had! Now that I’m all rebranded as nerdbiskit, (formerly Miss Belle’s Handmade Accessories) I am fully prepared to take over the world – I have about 15 shows on deck for 2012, so I’m going to be super busy, but I love every minute of it πŸ™‚

Over the weekend, I was busy working away on some last minute items for the show – specifically, pocket mirrors! I also worked on packaging for them and am pretty excited to start selling ’em! You can see all the designs on my Etsy shop, but here is a sneak preview:

And also, here’s my test set up for this weekend:

As you can see, I am rockin’ a nice full table all to myself – I could actually even spread out to 2… but maybe that will be next year’s feat πŸ˜‰ I’m super excited that my lovely assistant will be joining me on Saturday and can’t wait to see some familiar faces in the crowd! 4 more sleeps! πŸ˜€

Oh, and don’t forget to check in tomorrow to see my weekly guest blogger, the fabulous fashion illustrator, Miss Wendy Ding!

Top Mustaches! & The Daily Dress(es)

Today I was supposed to be road-tripping to Ottawa with my boy, B, to visit some awesome palsies! But the weather forced us to reschedule for St. Patty’s weekend. I’m pretty bummed, but decided to make the best of it and cheer myself up by making a list of some MARVELOUS MEN WITH MUSTACHES! πŸ™‚ See, easy fix. Simple things always work best. Pass this on to any pals you have that are feeling bummed about winter too. Hopefully the warmth of these ‘staches will help to warm their hearts and souls ❀ Or at least provoke a chuckle or two?

I tried to use one example from a variety of mustache styles! Feel free to share your own fave ‘stached men in the comment section below! ENJOY!

#10. RON JEREMY. Ew. Rocks the Porn ‘Stache – greasy and ratty. No form, no styling aids necessary. Messy and unkempt.

#9. JACK LAYTON. This one is called the Proud Canadian – fully gray, or salt & pepper in colour. Neatly clipped; must be worn by a strong, caring, inspirational man in power. Rest in peace, sir.

#8. FREDDIE MERCURY. This is a classic Copstache – extends just beyond the corner of the mouth, and down slightly. Trimmed short. Accompanied by aviator shades and male tank top or cop uniform.

#7. JOHN WATERS. Can I tell you how much I love this man and his bizarre movies? And his bizarre mustache… know as the Pencil Mustache – narrow, straight and thin as if drawn on by a pencil, closely clipped, outlining the upper lip, with a wide shaven gap between the nose and mustache.

#6. BURT REYNOLDS. Um… I am too distracted by this terrifying photo to even talk about his mustache right now… moving on.

#5. HULK HOGAN. Horseshoe – Often confused with the Handlebar Mustache, the horseshoe was possibly popularized by modern cowboys and consists of a full mustache with vertical extensions from the corners of the lips down to the jawline and resembling an upside-down horseshoe. Also known as “biker mustache”.

#4: ROLLIE FINGERS. Solid example of the Handlebar – bushy, with upward pointing ends, sometimes curled.

#3: CHARLIE CHAPLIN. Toothbrush – thick, but shaved except for about an inch in the center; also associated with Adolf Hitler.

#2: SALVADOR DALI. ‘Nuff said. Look at those glorious peaks – this style of ‘stache is even named after him. DalΓ – narrow, long points bent or curved steeply upward; areas past the corner of the mouth must be shaved. Artificial styling aids needed.

#1. TOM SELLECK. Has he ever NOT rocked this beautiful lip sweater? I can’t remember him without it…I believe this is classified as the Hungarian – Big and bushy, beginning from the middle of the upper lip and pulled to the side. The hairs are allowed to start growing from up to a maximum of 1.5Β cm beyond the end of the upper lip.

Anyway, I feel better now. Nothing like a good mustache to brighten the day! I am off to craft, so I’ll leave you with The Daily Dress – from yesterday and today!

Friday Fun Times!

Saturday ‘Stache Surfin’!
