June Blog

Time for my monthly blog update! I’ve been busy as usual since my last post – I moved to Hamilton over the May long weekend and everything went smoothly! It was super fast and easy, and I was grateful for all of the help from family and pals. What a lucky gal I am! It didn’t take long to unpack the boxes and set everything up (we were literally all unpacked by Monday evening, except for a few shelves and wall decorations.) I can’t stand living amid chaos and boxes, so I pretty much didn’t bother sleeping until everything was in it’s place πŸ™‚

It was hard saying goodbye to my retro townie – I loved this place so much, and so did the kitties:

But it didn’t take long to adjust to the new place, and here are a few of my favourite things/spaces – first up, obviously, the ‘biskit craft room!!! It was already painted a pale pea green which sort of matches with my brand colours – how perfect!

I also love the peg board in the kitchen (we cook a lot, so this is amazingly convenient):

I also dig our funky little living room:

and this super sweet retro brown chair that I picked up for only $7Β  – what a find! The kitties love it, too (which is the most important part):

New home sweet home ❀ I also love the area we’re in – so many beautiful gardens all around the neighbourhood πŸ™‚ And I’m closer to more of my pals now, too (old and new ones) which is exciting!

I got some of the sweetest house warming gifts, including this chalkboard photo frame from my friend Miss Tea. We made them together as a super fun craft project, which was the best part:

And this adorable pom pom plant from Heather – which matches perfectly in the craft room with it’s green & orange:

Such sweet ladies!

After the move and unpacking were complete, I had to get back to crafting ASAP! May/June are the beginning of wedding season, which is probably the busiest time of year for custom orders (next to Christmas, of course.) Plenty of brides-to-be have been requesting bottle opener keychains and pocket mirrors for wedding favours:

8902_527692173944655_1932625872_n268230_529521773761695_305944934_n

and I’ve also been getting lots of requests for custom couple portrait pillows. I love making these!

946746_528842980496241_353781715_n922898_10151461419221130_1275470757_n

I’m super behind in re-stocking for shows with all the requests, but hopefully I can get caught up this week before my next show, Heirlooms, An Etsy Artisan Market, in Welland on Saturday June 15th! My dear friend Heather of Needlings will be there as well which makes it even more awesome! 5 more sleeps!

I did manage to squeeze in one show on June 1st, Craftstock on James North in Hamilton. Always a fun time thanks to Laura, the lovely organizer, and also creator behind Adelaide πŸ™‚ (she makes some super sweet hair flowers so check ’em out at the next Craftstock!) This was my set up for the show (although much less yellow-tinged in person – haha, sorry about that):

In other exciting news, I got a new job, still as a graphic designer, but at a design agency a little closer to my new home! I’ve always wanted to work at an agency so am super excited. People are always shocked to hear that I work full time on top of running my own bizz, while also balancing a social life… I wish I had the secret to doing it all to share with you. I guess my tips would be: plenty of caffeinated tea! And cat naps! And have lots of crafty friends so hangouts can double as “work” dates! Probably a bit of motivation and passion don’t hurt, either πŸ˜‰

Anyway, after Heirlooms, I am taking July off of shows to prep for the August Art Crawl on James North in Hamilton, Fan Expo, Locke Street Festival, and Supercrawl! My most favourite shows of the year! WOO HOO!

Hope you guys are doing great! Happy early summer!

May Madness

Hi guys! Happy almost long weekend ahead! Mine is going to be pretty crazy since I’m moving on Saturday – but at least I’ll have the extra day off on Monday to get unpacked and settled πŸ™‚ I’m excited about the new place, but am totally going to miss my sweet retro townie. It’s all big and lonely here though, I have one bedroom entirely empty (save a spare litter box for the kitties), and a big dark empty basement full of spiders… so although the new place will be quite small in comparison, it will be cozy and adorable, still super retro (I have a pantry!) and much less lonely, since my bf will be moving in, too. We bought a mustard yellow corduroy couch last night, which got me a little too excited about decorating and scouring antique and thrift stores for some cool finds.

Anyway, I’ve been busier than usual – since I had to fit packing into the mix – plus the usual custom orders and restocking. One of the custom requests I worked on was a Dr. Who themed custom portrait pillow for a geek wedding:

931302_517208414993031_1394678281_n

I also had a show, Art-O-Con, in Burlington on May 5th which was a blast! There were a lot of familiar faces and I made a few new con-going pals, too. Even Boba Fett stopped by to say hi, and of course to try on a mustache:

946974_516116655102207_725612916_n

I have to give a shout out to the incredible Lara from Jaded Dragon Studios for doing such a great job of organizing the show, and just for being generally fantastic!

The ever awesome KStew & JStew interviewed me during the con – you can have a listen here: interview. Mostly I just giggle a lot. Oops. Silly nerves.

Their adorable daughter drew me my very first piece of fan art, too! Incredibly sweet and awesome. Nerdbiskit as a pony! ❀ And staches everywhere! Perfect.

575339_516079861772553_1110266804_n

I made myself a nerdbiskit skirt for the show, with some custom made fabric printed by Spoonflower! It was pretty easy to make, nothing too fancy. Next I want to make a ‘biskit dress! πŸ˜€

Amongst the busy-ness, I managed to squeeze in a visit to High Park in Toronto to see the cherry blossoms! They were absolutely beautiful, and a friend and I had a lovely dinner picnic under one of the trees. It was sad to see so many people shaking the branches just to make the blossoms fall off, and I heard people were climbing them and breaking off branches, too. Other than this lack of respect shown by a lot of the visitors (at least the ones we encountered), the park and the trees were incredible. Can’t wait to visit them again next year!

941274_10151416578991130_195996777_n

I also cut off my hair!!! I’ve been wanting to do it for a few years but always chicken out. I finally just had to let it go – and it was totally fine! I like it, but am still learning how to style it. It’s a lot more maintenance than my old scenester ‘do was! So far I’ve only experimented with curls and a 60’s flip … but it’s already proven to be a lot more versatile than before πŸ™‚

So many changes this month! Haircuts, moving… okay so really only two changes. But they are big ones! At least for me they are!

My next show will be Craftstock in Hamilton on Saturday, June 1st, and then Heirlooms on Saturday, June 15th. It’s going to be a lovely handmade market filled with awesome vendors, and situated in a greenhouse – so it’ll be beautiful AND fun AND crafty! A lovely way to kick off the summer show season!

Okay that’s it from me! Just as a heads up, my Etsy shop is closed until May 24, and I won’t be accepting any rush or custom orders until June – taking some time off due to the move. Thanks for your understanding!

Happy Spring!

Happy Spring, everyone! I’ve been keeping tabs on when the cherry blossoms in Toronto High Park are going to bloom, and apparently the buds are ready to burst soon – this coming weekend even! I’m so excited to take a trip to see them, as I’ve lived in the GTA for almost 10 years and have still never experienced it. Anyway, that’s a sure sign that spring is FINALLY here, despite the cold weather and recent snow. I can’t wait for FLOWERS! And trees and birds and sun and WARMTH! I can’t wait to be complaining about the HEAT rather than the cold. And to whip off these stockings to wear my dresses with bare legs! SO MUCH TO LOOK FORWARD TO!

Spring is already off to a busy busy start for me, and I’ve been a bit of a craft hermit lately as I desperately try to keep up with custom orders! Pillows, cat toys, and LOTS of buttons/bottle openers/mirrors!

426481_499949023385637_474624676_n

One recent Friday evening – just when I thought I was finally caught up with orders – I was literally about to sit down and start some sewing and restocking of my own merch for upcoming shows, Β when I received a very exciting phone call! It was from theΒ marketing director at Copps Coliseum, Hamilton. She said that Oprah was going to be in town the following evening for a live show and requested me to make the Big O one of my custom portrait pillows!!! The idea was to present this to Oprah as a unique, handmade gift from Hamilton – as a thank you for coming to visit! I was so flattered and excited, and once I stopped squealing and jumping for joy, ran out quickly to get a few supplies for the pillow before stores closed! I only managed to squeeze in about 5 hours of sleep before I had to deliver it to Copps Coliseum on Saturday afternoon. Although I was shaking through the final stitches (in excitement!) I was happy with how it turned out – and hopefully Oprah was, too.

17798_508286349218571_2000289254_n

They were unable to get a photo of The Big O holding it, (as you can imagine, she has quite a large entourage and crew of handlers that everything must pass through before eventually reaching her), but the gift was accepted and may or may not appear on/in something Oprah related in the future! So keep your eyes peeled, and be sure to let me know if you see it pop up! Maybe it’ll be on her favourites list! Who knows πŸ™‚ Either way, the directer at Copps said she might hit me up for more celeb pillows in the future, so that’s amazing too! I can’t wait to work on the next one!

150494_507913442589195_1071244446_n

Since then, I’ve been doing the usual restocking of supplies and merch, and even got started on a new prototype…. here’s a sneak peak. It’s going to be the silliest thing I’ve ever made, and I’ve been giggling to myself as I sew it together.

551366_511528685561004_1868713447_n

I also took an afternoon last weekend to be a shopper, rather than a vendor, at the most awesome show in Toronto, City Of Craft. My lovely lady friend Heather of Needlings and I went to the Christmas one for the first time (finally) this past December, and had our minds blown, so obviously we needed to check out the spring one, too! It was just as awesome, and we even donated our souls (a plucked piece of hair and a fingerprint) to We See Inc. Heather wrote more about it (and took plenty of photos) on her blog. We also had our photos taken at the Have & Hold photobooth with cats, mustaches, bows, and hearts – what more in life is there, really?

8672018375_603d35388c_c

Oh yeah, and I’m moving!!! From boring ol’ suburban Oakville to…. Hamilton (I wasn’t sure what words to use to describe this city, since everyone seems to have their own opinion of it.) We found an adorable place in a pretty area, close to plenty of independent stores, restaurants and coffee shops! I’m very excited/nervous/anxious and can’t wait to share photos once I’m settled. I figured it’s the best place for me anyway, since it’s where I have the most craft shows, and I want to become more involved with the art community that’s thriving in the Hammer! Who knows, maybe I’ll open up my own shop before you know it πŸ˜‰ There’s definitely a lot going on in that neck of the woods that I want to be a bigger part of! I’m sure going to miss my retro townie, but it’s time for a change! A good one! A great one!

On that note, I better get back to packing and sewing. (That’s a lie, I’m actually going out on a dinner date. But I promise to get some work done as soon as I get home!)

You can find me at Art-O-Con in Burlington on May 5th, or the next show after that will be Heirlooms on June 15th in Welland. (There may be an appearance at Craftstock in Hamilton in June as well, depending on how much restocking I can get done before and after the move!)

Have a good rest of your week, everyone!

Summer of nerdbiskit part 2

What a busy summer of nerdbiskit-ing this has been! I’m busier than ever before, even without having a 9-5 job on top of the craft bizz. There have been crafts shows, weddings, birthday celebrations, freelance design work, custom button orders and wedding portrait pillows, crafternoons with Needlings, beach days, and plenty of adventures in between. It’s been pretty awesome, and it’s not over yet! The biggest event of the summer is coming up in just a few days: FanExpo Canada! It’s my biggest and most exciting show of the year, so I’ve been working hard to prepare for it of course. I will be in Artist’s Alley, booth A89. (Check my facebook page for a map.) I’m so excited to launch a brand new item at the show… should I tell you what it is? OK! You might already know this, but I’ve been working on a calendar called “HOT CHICKS WITH MUSTACHES.” And that’s exactly what it is. 13 (12 months plus cover girl) pretty girls rockin’ a nerdbiskit ‘stache! I’m so excited to start selling them, and am so appreciative of all the girls who submitted their awesome ‘stache photos. It will be available online in my Etsy shop in September, so mark your calendars… (before you replace them with this new one for 2013 of course!) Want a sneak peak?!?!? Ok fine….

I’m pretty excited about it! I can’t wait to hear people’s reactions at FanExpo, I think it’s a pretty silly idea! πŸ™‚ I hope all the hard work pays off!

I’ve had a couple pretty awesome shows since I last blogged, including Atomic Lollipop! APOP was quite an adventure! I’d never done it before but had been hearing about it for a while and decided to give it a shot. The coolest part was definitely the ferris wheel, AND MEETING PJ PHIL! I heard that Saturday night was pretty radical with a NON STOP PARTY! (I unfortunately did not get to experience the party aspect of it, but I did go on the ferris wheel, and I did meet a lot of really cool people.)

This was my setup:

AND THIS IS ME WITH PJ PHIL!!!!

I also did my very first on-site mustache commission for a hedgehog named Marty:

After APOP, there was Art Crawl – just a few weeks ago on James Street North in Hamilton, which was awesome as usual. I think that is one of my most favourite shows of all, even though it’s only a few hours. I met some new pals at the latest one, they offered to work for me in exchange for only mustaches! They helped me out with set up and de-furring my table cover with a lint brush. I was pretty grateful for that since otherwise I would have been doing set up alone!

Look how happy I am. I just love doing shows πŸ™‚

Since then I’ve been hard at work with custom orders and restocking for FanExpo! Here’s a few of the things I’ve been working on.

My wedding portrait pillows seem to be quite a hit this year, I’m excited to work on a few more after FanExpo!

One of my favourite things about the summer of nerdbiskit has been weekly crafternoons with Heather of Needlings. Here are a few shots of us hard at work!

Look at us go! I’ve been sewing so hard, I actually got “tennis elbow” from overusing my arms! Ridiculous! I promise to rest after FanExpo. I also have 2 more big shows on deck after that, Locke Street Festival and Supercrawl, both in Hamilton. I’m so excited! So much to do though! Ahhh!

Well, I better get back to it. There are mustaches to be sewn!

Oh and in case you didn’t hear, my cat Greta had 15 minutes of fame as an internet meme. She was posted on the Taco Bell Facebook page and reddit and apparently got over 15,000 notes on tumblr! WOW!

So I made myself a shirt to celebrate.

You can’t spell CATTOY without T-A-C-O!

Ok that is all! Have a good week! See you at FanExpo! πŸ˜€

Long Overdue, Thursday Things I Dig!

Well folks, it has been a while since I have written a blog post that wasn’t from a guest blogger… so I figured I would fit in a Thursday Things I Dig! I am sitting here, enjoying tea and oranges, and ready to give you an update on what’s been up and why I’ve been so MIA πŸ™‚ Here’s my long overdue Thursday Things I Dig!

1. ENGLAND tomorrow!!! I am finally venturing across the seas to Europe, though only for a short time – just a week. I am going with 2 people who will be backpacking around for a month or so, and I only joining them during their first week in London. I’m finally EXCITED! It just hit me today when I actually got around to packing… I have 7 dresses, cardis & tights all lined up on my love seat and am ready to roll. (Miss Greta will not be packed into the suitcase, unfortunately. In place of her there will most likely be rain boots.) There will be plenty of sight-seeing, tea drinking, museum meandering & vintage shopping ahead! I plan to come back with a sweet vintage dress πŸ™‚Β  I promise I will share it with you all!

2. My 2013 nerdbiskit pin-up ‘stache calendar is under way! In case you missed it, I am designing a calendar featuring 11 lovely ladies (myself as the 12th) who share my love of ‘staches! All the mustaches have been mailed and I am anxiously awaiting the pinup photos to start rolling in. This is going to be AWESOME. I’m hoping to have it ready to start selling at FanExpo in August. Part of the proceeds are going to my friend, Tristan’s, MS Charity. I’m stoked that so many people are as excited about it and just as eager to participate as I am! Each lady will receive (or already has) a wearable nerdbiskit mustache and in return, will send me back an AWESOME pin up shot of them wearing that, PLUS a super cute retro dress (or retro something-rather.) Then I will get designing the layout! πŸ˜€ I can not even wait! I’ve been busy sewing & mailing out custom coloured ‘staches all week!

3. Nerdbiskit.com is well under way and I am hoping to launch it when I return from my trip. I’ve been busy web-designing for the past 2 weeks, off and on or course, and am about 70% complete. I’m pretty excited to share it with you all! During this process, I fell in love with a new program called Adobe Muse. It is one of the easiest programs for web design I have ever used! My site is nice and simple of course, so combined with a nice simple program, this has been a breeze! Here’s a sneak peak (and yes, there are plenty of ‘staches):

4. New ladies night dinner parties are under way with the ol’ work girls. (In case some of you didn’t know, I left my design job a few weeks ago! (Time to nerdbiskit & freelance design full time for the summer, woo!) Because I love my work ladies so much, and was so used to being with them 40 hours a week, I simply could not be without them – so we started a dinner party club! Our first one was last weekend. The host, Miss Tea, made the main course – almond breaded chicken with quinoa risotto & asparagus. I brought the kale salad, and there were also delicious apps & desserts from the others – and plenty of wine! SO DELICIOUS. I can’t wait for the next one, I think I will host it in mid June – I just have to come up with something equally as delicious as the last one!

5. I don’t know if you knew this about me, but I sort of love any excuse to get dressed up… so last night I was invited to be the eye candy/DD at a film screening & awards ceremony, so I rocked a classy black dress and some curls. The dress itself was 30 bucks and I went ahead and altered it by adding a peek-a-boo polka dot hem along the bottom to give it a little extra pizazz. Anyway, here’s me at my attempt to be classy with a 50’s vibe! I promise I didn’t make this awkward winky face in public.

6. I confirmed my first freelance design client! We’ll be meeting up when I return from England to start working away on projects. I am so excited! Freelance designing combined with nerdbiskit-ing for a while is going to be a blast – and a much needed and exciting change!

Ok, that’s about it! I am waiting on a customer to stop by and pick up some ‘staches, and then it is back to packing! I’ve been busy with custom orders lately, which is awesome! Oh, and if you need custom buttons for your weddings and bachelorette parties coming up, let me know – I’ve got some designs ready to go and will be posting them on Etsy when I return. Message me if you need anything πŸ™‚ (INAPPROPRIATE GRAPHICS BELOW)

Just some stuff…

Man, I wish I had a theme song for Thursday Things I Dig! Alas, we will have to suffer through another weekly post together, without one. And if anyone wants to make me a jingle and donate it to my blog, please feel free πŸ™‚

Another busy week! Aren’t they all? I have a show this weekend, Wizard World Comic Con in the ol’ T-dot so I’m excited for that, and then I am taking a month off of shows for some personal time, to build nerdbiskit.com… and a trip to Europe! Which leads me into my Thursday Things I Dig!

1. LONDON IS BOOKED! I will be heading over to England in May with some peeps for a wee vacation! I also have a friend in Scotland that I am hoping to meet up with while I am over there, though I don’t have a whole lot of time. I’ve never been, so I am pretty excited! Naturally, I’ve already scoped out the best affordable vintage shopping areas. I like to buy a dress every time I visit some place new, so I’m excited to share what I find in London when I return.

2. WIZARD WORLD Comic Con this weekend! Here’s a little sneak peak at my set up. I hope it’s a good show, I remember the past few years have been great and I have a nice full 8′ table all to myself this time around, so my expectations are high! But not too high. You never know how it could turn out. Anyway, I have a table companion on Sunday, but will be solo on Saturday so am a little nervous about what to do when I need a pee break! Haha. Feel free to come visit me, and please offer to watch my booth so I can pee? πŸ™‚

3. I acquired this super sweet vintage sewing basket over the long weekend. It used to belong to my grandma, and when I was up North visiting my parents my mom passed it my way! It’s even filled with tons of thread and needles and other good stuff!

4. I watched an amazing documentary on Kevin Clash, the puppeteer behind Elmo. His story was so inspirational and made me feel like a kid again, in that I can do anything I want, and be anything I want to be. It was awesome. Also working at the Jim Henson studios, making puppets and having access to drawers full of fur, mustaches, eyes, etc… INCREDIBLE. What a dream. I want to be Kevin Clash.

5. Someone sent me this via Twitter earlier this week: COWBOY COMB and it is easily one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen. Particularly the gold one, for only $100. If only I had a ‘stache, I would buy it up in a second. But since I don’t, someone also shared this Build-A-Beard with me, downloadable and cut-out-able beards! This will just have suffice for now.

6. What is this I found? Tetley PERK? A new tea that claims to have all the caffeine content of a coffee? I’m excited to test it out tomorrow morning.

7. Oh, and last fun thing, I received a happy button testimonial from a fantastic customer AND SUPER COOL COMEDIAN who you should check out, Fat Apollo, celebrity:
“Got my buttons! Easily the best I have ever ordered!”

THE BEST!?!? From me? Celebrity endorsed? Well okay, I’ll accept it. And appreciate the feedback. Thanks to Mr. Apollo who gave me permission to use his awesome quote πŸ™‚

I guess that’s it! I have to run off and do some last minute crafting to top up my stock before the show this weekend. Here’s hoping it’s a good one! You can follow my live show posts on Facebook or Twitter πŸ™‚

I Make Buttons, Didja Know? & The Daily Dress

Today was one of the most productive days ever! Not that I don’t often have days like this, I just pushed extra hard since I have so much to get done for my first show of the year, in only TWO WEEKS – Toronto ComiCon on March 10 & 11!!! I will be away next weekend in Ottawa, visiting a very good lady pal (<3!) so I had to get as much done today as possible, just in case this week gets busy in the evenings… you just never know. I think I’m about ready to go, save a few minor finishing touches… oh and signage. Oh, and a display for totes. Oh and a few more bottle openers…. OMG I’M NOT EVEN CLOSE *minor freak out*

Ok, no I think I really am good to go πŸ™‚

Anyway, in case you didn’t already know this about me… I make buttons! LOTS OF BUTTONS. And guess what? I take custom requests for bulk button orders. I have 2 fantastic, semi-automatic professional machines, in 1″ and 2.25″. I updated my Etsy today with the 2.25″ bottle openers, the 1″ buttons are already on there, and soon I will have 2.25″ buttons and pocket mirrors up there as well. (Possibly even tonight!)

I already had my first bottle opener order for bridal shower favours! (I posted about them last Sunday) which I thought was a very cool idea, and have a second order on deck. Woo! Busybusybusy.

If you’re interested in ordering any, just email me: nerdbiskit@hotmail.com

All the pricing is listed on my Etsy shop, and just because I heart you for following my blog, you can use coupon code BLOGFAN for 20% off πŸ™‚

I also whipped up a Ryan Gosling keychain bottle opener… just because it had to be done.

The process of pressing buttons is sort of calming for me. I could do it for hours… actually, I have done it for hours, many, many times! My largest order so far was for 1000 1″ buttons, it was pretty intense but luckily I had a few months to complete it.

Hmmm what else did I want to tell you… oh yah! My guest blogger this week is going to be the very lovely and talented freelance make up artist, Miss Kristen Harper!

I’m very excited about sharing her awesome work with you! She’s a pretty cool lady, and I used to work with her back in the day as a visual merchandiser… but I don’t want to ruin Wednesday’s guest post!

Ok, I’m out! Signs to be made!

Here’s The Daily Dress – boring ol’ dress for chores and crafting. I also attempted a high bun for the first time… perhaps I might rock it in public sometime, it’s not too terrible I suppose.
