Success! & The Daily Dress

Well folks, my first show of the year was a huge success! Toronto ComiCON was a blast, 2 days of networking and catching up with pals, old and new! It was fantastic to see so many familiar faces and to meet so many new ones, too. I just love the positive energy at shows and the number of exciting opportunities that present themselves. (I can’t wait to share some very exciting news with you all in the near future, but must keep it secret for now… OH MY GOSH I HATE KEEPING SECRETS! But I must…) Anyway, I sold so many mustaches and took plenty of photos of very awesome ‘stache fans – you can see the entire album on my Facebook fan page.

I didn’t get much of a chance to wander around, only quick bathroom breaks and then back to the table to sell! It was a blast and I always find it hard to head back into the ‘real world’ on the Monday after. Sigh. Oh well, only 5 more weeks until the next show, Wizard Comic Con in April.  I have a ton of restocking to do – mostly mustaches, catnip kitty toys, and unisex cotton totes (not yet for sale on Etsy)! 😀 Those were the big sellers this past weekend, along with buttons as per usual! 🙂 I also decided that I need to restructure my display to hold MORE product and maximize such a small space (6 feet is just not going to cut it). Also I am hidden behind a wall of merch which posed to be problematic… anyway, some minor tweaking and new displays and I should be good to go by the next one!

To everyone who bought a nerdbiskit mustache at the con this weekend – or ever – you didn’t even know it, but half of the ‘stache money gets donated to the Tristan WilliaMS Charity (for MS!) So you are awesome for rockin’ a stache AND for supporting a good cause! Thank you so much!

I should also let you know that The Daily Dress is coming to an end! I took a break this weekend because of the con, so here is today’s:

I will do a recap once it’s finished up and a final dress count. AND THEN BUY A DRESS TO CELEBRATE! WOO!!! 😀

Anyway, I am off to wrap up my button order for NYC Pride!

Check in tomorrow for my Wednesday Guest Blogger, musician/artist Katie Overbeek of The Snow Peas.

Thursday Things I Dig

I’ve been working all evening on a bulk order of buttons for NYC Pride! Pretty excited, and it’s my second largest order to date, so lots to do! Also, only 2 more sleeps until ComiCON! I’m also very excited for this, but also nervous… I hope it goes swimmingly! 😀

Anyway, here is my Thursday Things I Dig list!

1. This new incense I bought from EARTHY Co on Etsy! It was a tough decision, but I went with the chai tea, brown sugar & vanilla, cinnamon bun and gingerbread! I haven’t decided on a favourite since they are all so very delightful!

2. The MadMen dress collection at Banana Republic. I was pretty close to buying this one (here) but decided that the light colour might be a terrible idea… I spill tea on myself a lot. By a lot I mean every time I drink tea. Which is like 5 times a day…

3. New Said The Whale came out on Tuesday, and I dig it. You can listen to the album in it’s entirety, for FREE, here.

4. Also the new Cranberries album is in heavy rotation for me at work this week. I heart this 90’s music revival (preview on YouTube.)

5. And finally, I am most excited about COMICON THIS WEEKEND! First show of 2012!

That’s about it! I promise to post some fun photos from ComiCon next week, and just a heads up that I might be MIA for the next few days! :O Don’t miss me too much!

GUEST BLOGGER: Freelance Fashion Illustrator – Wendy Ding

Freelance Fashion Illustrator, Miss Wendy Ding

This Wednesday I would like to welcome Miss Wendy Ding to be my guest blogger! Wendy and I have spent some time together, mostly talking about cute boys in bands, doing some singing and also a little bit of dancing! She is certainly a stylish lady, which is probably why she makes such a fantastic fashion illustrator! Some of my favourite illustrations by Wendy are her food girls – make sure you check them out because they are quite delicious! Hope you enjoy 🙂

All images copyright Wendy Ding. All rights reserved 2007 – 2012 Wendy Ding and/or respective owners. Unauthorized use of any materials is strictly prohibited.

nerdbiskit: So, what’s the story? Who are you, and what do you do? How did it all start? Short bio!

Wendy: My name is Wendy Ding and I’m an illustrator with a penchant for drawing all things fashion related. It started when I was little and played dress up in my mom’s clothes. I was born in China and lived there til I was almost 9. Then I moved to England (where my parents were studying) for 1.5 years before calling Toronto, Canada my new home.

nerdbiskit: Why do you do it?

Wendy: Because I love it and almost nothing else makes me feel more fulfilled. Also because it’s the most honest way for me to contribute myself to the world.

nerdbiskit: What’s unique about you and what you do? What sets you apart from the pack?

Wendy: Hmm… I guess I always try to inject a bit of my personality and life into my work. Either in terms of quirkiness, colour choices, or resemblance to my friends/crushes!

nerdbiskit: What/who is your inspiration?

Wendy: I listen to music all the time when I work, so that definitely inspires me on a regular basis. Other than that, I guess confident, positive and go-getter type people inspire me!

nerdbiskit: What are some of your favourite things? (To do, to eat, to think about, etc.)

Wendy: I love to dance, go shopping (window or actual), drink tea, watch funny shows (Portlandia!) and movies, and most recently I’ve been getting into podcasts. “This American Life” is a particular fave.

nerdbiskit: How do you know Lisa Bell of nerdbiskit? Do you think her mustache obsession is a little ridiculous?

Wendy: We were Sheridan College classmates when we were both studying illustration! I got to know Lisa very well one summer when we bonded over Backstreet Boys and other 90’s boy band nostalgia. Good times !

I think her mustache obsession is awesome! Just another way for us gals to have fun with facial hair.

nerdbiskit: Anything else you’d like to share? Any fun facts about you?

Don’t know how cool this is but to this day I still find it easier to count in Mandarin. It was the first language I learned and although English is my primary now as I’ve spoken it the longest, the way numbers are constructed in Mandarin make more logical sense. I don’t know, I guess you’ll have to speak it to know it.

Malcolm Gladwell explains it well here in this snippet from his book “Outliers.”

nerdbiskit: That about wraps it up! Check out more of this fantastic lady’s work via the links below – perhaps even commission her for a fantastically fashionable portrait!

Here’s The Daily Dress! Nothing screams “spring is here” like purple snake print… uh, right?

4 More Sleeps ’til ComiCon & The Daily Dress(es)

It’s been a few days, so first I need to catch y’all up on The Daily Dress – Saturday, Monday & today.

I’m running out of dresses that I can wear to work, and pretty much only have bummin’ around the house ones or party ones left! So what does that mean? I’m almost done with The Daily Dress! This is bitter-sweet for me, since it was a blast and a fun challenge, but I am running out of “poses” and my photographers are growing weary… I’ll have to do one final, official count of all my posts and perhaps reward myself with purchasing a brand new dress?!?! 😀 Me thinks this is a genius idea…

Anyway, I have a show this weekend, Toronto ComiCon, so I’m super excited! If you’re coming to visit, make sure to stop by booth A47 (floor plan can be downloaded here) and try on a mustache or two! *(If you haven’t seen my mustache fan album on Facebook, be sure to check it out!) This year is going to be the BEST year for shows I’ve ever had! Now that I’m all rebranded as nerdbiskit, (formerly Miss Belle’s Handmade Accessories) I am fully prepared to take over the world – I have about 15 shows on deck for 2012, so I’m going to be super busy, but I love every minute of it 🙂

Over the weekend, I was busy working away on some last minute items for the show – specifically, pocket mirrors! I also worked on packaging for them and am pretty excited to start selling ’em! You can see all the designs on my Etsy shop, but here is a sneak preview:

And also, here’s my test set up for this weekend:

As you can see, I am rockin’ a nice full table all to myself – I could actually even spread out to 2… but maybe that will be next year’s feat 😉 I’m super excited that my lovely assistant will be joining me on Saturday and can’t wait to see some familiar faces in the crowd! 4 more sleeps! 😀

Oh, and don’t forget to check in tomorrow to see my weekly guest blogger, the fabulous fashion illustrator, Miss Wendy Ding!

Top Mustaches! & The Daily Dress(es)

Today I was supposed to be road-tripping to Ottawa with my boy, B, to visit some awesome palsies! But the weather forced us to reschedule for St. Patty’s weekend. I’m pretty bummed, but decided to make the best of it and cheer myself up by making a list of some MARVELOUS MEN WITH MUSTACHES! 🙂 See, easy fix. Simple things always work best. Pass this on to any pals you have that are feeling bummed about winter too. Hopefully the warmth of these ‘staches will help to warm their hearts and souls ❤ Or at least provoke a chuckle or two?

I tried to use one example from a variety of mustache styles! Feel free to share your own fave ‘stached men in the comment section below! ENJOY!

#10. RON JEREMY. Ew. Rocks the Porn ‘Stachegreasy and ratty. No form, no styling aids necessary. Messy and unkempt.

#9. JACK LAYTON. This one is called the Proud Canadian fully gray, or salt & pepper in colour. Neatly clipped; must be worn by a strong, caring, inspirational man in power. Rest in peace, sir.

#8. FREDDIE MERCURY. This is a classic Copstacheextends just beyond the corner of the mouth, and down slightly. Trimmed short. Accompanied by aviator shades and male tank top or cop uniform.

#7. JOHN WATERS. Can I tell you how much I love this man and his bizarre movies? And his bizarre mustache… know as the Pencil Mustachenarrow, straight and thin as if drawn on by a pencil, closely clipped, outlining the upper lip, with a wide shaven gap between the nose and mustache.

#6. BURT REYNOLDS. Um… I am too distracted by this terrifying photo to even talk about his mustache right now… moving on.

#5. HULK HOGAN. HorseshoeOften confused with the Handlebar Mustache, the horseshoe was possibly popularized by modern cowboys and consists of a full mustache with vertical extensions from the corners of the lips down to the jawline and resembling an upside-down horseshoe. Also known as “biker mustache”.

#4: ROLLIE FINGERS. Solid example of the Handlebarbushy, with upward pointing ends, sometimes curled.

#3: CHARLIE CHAPLIN. Toothbrushthick, but shaved except for about an inch in the center; also associated with Adolf Hitler.

#2: SALVADOR DALI. ‘Nuff said. Look at those glorious peaks – this style of ‘stache is even named after him. Dalínarrow, long points bent or curved steeply upward; areas past the corner of the mouth must be shaved. Artificial styling aids needed.

#1. TOM SELLECK. Has he ever NOT rocked this beautiful lip sweater? I can’t remember him without it…I believe this is classified as the Hungarian – Big and bushy, beginning from the middle of the upper lip and pulled to the side. The hairs are allowed to start growing from up to a maximum of 1.5 cm beyond the end of the upper lip.

Anyway, I feel better now. Nothing like a good mustache to brighten the day! I am off to craft, so I’ll leave you with The Daily Dress – from yesterday and today!

Friday Fun Times!

Saturday ‘Stache Surfin’!

Thursday Things I Dig & The Daily Dress

This has been the BUSIEST WEEK EVER. At work and at home. Full crazy days, plans every evening… I am absolutely exhausted! But looking forward to a mini-vacation this weekend – going to Ottawa to visit a lady friend. I’m excited for a mini road-trip with B and then some hang outs with one of my favourite ladies of all time! ❤

That’s the first thing on the list tonight – 1. MINI VACATION AND PAL TIME!

Here are some other things…

2. I Love… Vanilla & Ice Cream body wash. So friggin’ delicious I could eat it!

3. Strawberry shortcake flavoured gum… mmmmm… you can even taste the whipped cream

4. Kashi honey sesame crackers… they are so addictive. I just can’t stop.

(Moving on from food and delicious smells now…)

5. That damn Gotye song – the video for it is actually pretty cool!

6. Getting my teeth cleaned – I heart the dentist! ❤

7. Got another custom button order – my second biggest of all time!

8. Miss Heather found this on Etsy and shared it with me… kind of need it!

9. I WON ON ROLLUP. Just a free tea, but better than last year, which was nothing.

10. The fact that this week is ALMOST OVER!!! I AM BURNED OUT HARD!!!

Ok, that’s it for me. Off to make keychain bottle openers, write a bio for a blog I’m going to be part of, and catch up on some shows!
